Effects of the Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation Technique on Scapula Function in Office Workers with Scapula Dyskinesis. (2021)

PICO

Patient/Population

Office Workers with Scapula Dyskinesis

(n=42)

Intervention

  • Muscle strengthening (MS)

  • Muscle balance (MB)

  • Movement control (MC)

Comparison

  • Muscle strengthening (MS)

  • Muscle balance (MB)

  • Movement control (MB)

Outcomes

  • Scapula position

  • Scapula Movement

  • Disability

  • Pain
  • Work ability

  • Sports and art activity ability

Translatability:   (3/3) Easy

Comments: “PNF for upper limb movement control exercises is more effective than muscle strengthening and muscle balance exercises.

Limitations: intervention methods were not provided by subdividing scapula dyskinesis type. Therefore, it will be helpful in clinical intervention if subdivided intervention methods are applied for each type .

Appraisals:

PEDro Scale  – (7/10) Blind subjects: No; Blind therapists: No; Blind assessors: No. (by PEDro – confirmed)

Trustworthiness – The study contains no serious weaknesses. Based on this result you should conclude that the trustworthiness of the study is high (90%). This means there is a 10% chance that alternative explanations for the effect found are possible. The effect size was large and 95% CI was OK. (by CAT for RCTS)

BTB

Intervention – 1

  • M Strengthening

Dose

  • 3 sets (5 min per set with a 5-min break in between sets) of 10 repetitions.

Periodicity

  • 3 times a week for 6 weeks (MS+MB+MC)

Local/Technic:

Exercise for scapula – 5 bilateral axial for strengthening the muscles around the scapula by lifting the arm from the prone position.

    Intervention – 2

    • M Balance

    Dose

    • 3 sets (5 min per set with a 5-min break in between sets) of 10 repetitions, at a 10 repetition maximum load (using 10 RM, but no more than 2 kg.).

    Periodicity

    • 3 times a week for 6 weeks (MS+MB+MC)

    Local/Technic:

For reducing the hyperactivity of the triceps and balances the activities of the middle trapezius, lower trapezius, and serratus anterior muscles.

    Intervention – 3

    • M Control

    Dose

    • PNF performed with “normal timing” for the entire pattern and with “timing for emphasis” emphasizing the scapula position.

    Periodicity

    • 3 times a week for 6 weeks (MS+MB+MC)

    Local/Technic:

Motor learning method for dynamically stabilizing the control and movement of the scapula (trapezius and serratus anterior muscles), by extending the arm forward using PNF technique, for scapula and upper limb pattern, and the principles of the “timing for emphasis” and “irradiation” techniques (D1-flexion, adduction, external rotation and D2-flexion, abduction, and external rotation).
